Does the algorithm provide a diagnosis for my skin lesion?

Please ensure that the algorithm’s results are not considered a definite diagnosis for any skin condition. The algorithm is not intended to replace a dermatologist’s physical examination for diagnosing skin diseases. In-person inspection of dermatologists is much more accurate.  While the algorithm may provide relevant information for skin images, a correct diagnosis requires an in-person physical examination and medical history taken by a trained dermatologist.

How accurate is the algorithm?

The algorithm could provide more accurate information than random internet searches, and the accuracies of the algorithm were equivalent to that of general physicians. For the internet community images (Reddit), the accuracy of the algorithm was 39.2% (1st result; Top-1 accuracy) / 67.2% (1st ~ 3rd results; Top-3 accuracy).

How should I use the algorithm?

The algorithm’s results can assist in obtaining medical information related to relevant signs and symptoms of various diseases. Compared to a general search engine, the algorithm can provide more accurate information and clues for medical research. Please seek a doctor’s advice in addition to using this app before making any medical decisions.

What does ‘High Risk’ mean?

If a lesion repeatedly receives a high-risk result, it is recommended to see a dermatologist rather than a general practitioner. During an in-person examination, a dermatologist considers various factors such as changes in the lesion to make a proper diagnosis. Please be aware that making a medical decision based only on the result of the App can lead to overdiagnosis or false assurance.

In what setting does the algorithm work best?

The algorithm can provide accurate advice on Asian skin lesions, and it was also trained and validated on images of white populations. However, it has not been fully validated for black people and may show some uncertainty in those cases. Additionally, the algorithm performs poorly for low-quality, blurry photographs.

Are the submitted photographs stored?

The photograph is transferred for cloud analysis, however, we do NOT store your images. 

How many disease classes have been validated?

A total of 133 disease classes have been validated. The accuracy and balanced accuracy of the algorithm were comparable with those of dermatologists in the experimental setting.
